Transportation in Jordan
Your guide to getting around the kingdom
Rental Cars
Most Flexible Option
Renting a car gives you the most flexibility to explore Jordan at your own pace. Roads are generally in good condition, and driving is on the right side.
- Cost: 20-50 JOD/day depending on vehicle type
- International driving license required
- Book in advance for better rates
Taxis & Ride-Hailing
Taxis are readily available in cities. Yellow taxis should use meters in Amman (insist on this). Uber and Careem operate in major cities and are often more convenient.
- Yellow taxis: Metered, starting at 0.25 JOD
- Uber/Careem: Convenient and transparent pricing
- Servees (shared taxis): Budget option for intercity travel
Public Buses (JETT)
JETT is the main bus company connecting major tourist destinations. Modern, air-conditioned buses run daily routes between Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum, Aqaba, and the Dead Sea.
- Amman to Petra: ~7-10 JOD, 3 hours
- Amman to Aqaba: ~10 JOD, 4 hours
- Book tickets in advance during high season
Private Drivers & Organized Tours
Hiring a private driver or joining an organized tour is stress-free and often includes expert local knowledge. Prices vary but expect 50-100 JOD/day for a private driver.
